Sending a book is free, and every submission gets an answer within eight weeks. How to send it

Home / Editorial development

Work on the manuscript itself.

For writers whose book is not ready to submit, and for publishers who need an outside reader. Each engagement is agreed in writing before it starts.

Manuscript assessment

A written reader report on structure, pacing, voice and market position, with a clear recommendation on what to do next.

Developmental editing

Work on the book itself: structure, chronology, character, point of view. Delivered as an annotated manuscript plus an editorial letter.

Line and copy editing

Sentence-level editing for clarity and rhythm, then a copyedit for consistency, grammar and house style.

Proofreading

A final pass on typeset pages or final files before printing, catching what earlier stages left behind.

Translation review

Reading a translated manuscript against the original for accuracy, register and readability before it goes to the publisher.

Submission package

The pitch letter, synopsis, comparable titles and author biography an editor actually needs in order to say yes.

Buying an edit does not buy representation.

I never charge editorial fees to an author I represent. Commissioning an edit does not make representation more likely, and being represented does not require commissioning one.
